Ironman verspeelt veel krediet, zodra stof is opgetrokken staat iedereen toch weer aan de start – WTJ 2901
DINSDAG – Beter laat dan nooit. Het is The Day After in Hamburg. De dag nadat een 70-jarige motorrijder het evenement niet meer na kan vertellen. De juiste toedracht van het ongeval wordt door de Duitse politie nog onderzocht, maar het lijkt erop dat de motard, zoals vele motorrijders, zich bij de kopgroep van het grote deelnemersveld bevond, terwijl aan de andere kant van de weg de agegroupers hen tegemoet kwamen. Of de motard daarbij nog binnen de weghelft reed van de kopgroep onder aanvoering van de Deen Kristian Hogenhaug of te veel uitweek naar links waardoor de frontale botsing onvermijdelijk was, wordt allemaal nader onderzocht.
‘Beter laat dan nooit.’ Daar openden we dit bericht mee. De herdenking maandagochtend met organisatoren, atleten, vrijwilligers en andere betrokkenen maakte wel enigszins goed wat op zondag hopeloos fout ging. De prijsuitreiking was sober, de slot-toewijzing gebeurde haast achter de schermen. Over Europese titels werd niet gesproken. Het was een gepaste slotceremonie, waarmee Ironman alsnog een menselijke kant liet zien. Goed beschouwd was het eigenlijk wel te laat.
Reactie Jan Frodeno
Het gebeurde voor de neus van Jan Frodeno, die op dat moment in de kopgroep meefietste. Jan plaatste bijgaan bericht:
There is so much to process from today. It feels gut wrenching to have seen someone die right next to me and unknowingly continue to race, give it my all and fall well short. My condolences go out to the family of the motorcycle driver who helped cover the race and my best wishes for a full recovery to the oncoming cyclist. Today was a tough day for the Ironman family and I think we’ll all take a while to process it and realise life is precious but very fragile.
Hij voert geenszins het ongeval als excuus op voor zijn vierde plaats en vindt Denis Chevrot de terechte winnaar.
I don’t want to blame my performance on any outside factors. For some reason or other I just didn’t have it. I had nothing. I was suffering most of the day, trying to pull myself together. I don’t really know why, the last few days have felt really good. I felt great in the warm up. Sporting wise, for me personally, it was a pretty rough day. We’ll just have to go back to the drawing board and see what happens.
Terwijl Ironman later op de zondag haar best deed ‘damage control’ te minimaliseren, regende het op Social Media aantijgingen aan het adres van het grootste triathlonmerk ter wereld. Het zware ongeval tijdens de Ironman Hamburg waarbij een motard om het leven kwam en een atleet zwaar gewond heeft het imago van Ironman opnieuw een flinke deuk opgelopen. Het is niet zozeer de verkeerde inschatting van veel te veel motoren op het parcours als wel de nonchalante manier waarop Ironman daarna communiceerde alsof er niets was gebeurd.
Onwetend
Veel atleten wisten na afloop nog niet de ernst van de situatie, behalve dan dat ze bij het passeren met de fiets in de hand de dijk opgestuurd werden om het ongeval waar de hulpdiensten volop bezig waren te kunnen omzeilen. De wedstrijd stop zetten is wellicht het andere uiterste, maar dat Ironman gefaald heeft in heldere berichtgeving en vooral empathie naar de slachtoffers toe is inmiddels wel duidelijk. Het moest bovenal een feestelijk sportevenement blijven, terwijl enige ingetogenheid hier toch zeer op z’n plaats was.

Someone said during the bike part they said they were experiencing “technical difficulties” that being the reason why they couldn’t broadcast the end of the bike. Absolutely disgusting.
Cancel the race, that would be the right decision
Like our whole world, wins over the heads of all men. The lobbyists, politicians and the rich scorn the whole people. We are not in this world to have a career or to get rich. We are here to live together and be happy. Triathlete for 37 years but Ironman destroys this beautiful sport. Shame on you!! Also the commentators who were triathletes from the very beginning?? It’s in our hands to change it, think about it!!
